Central Street Evanston proudly presents its semi-annual Retail Therapy Night - a much anticipated tradition for almost a decade. This special event, which takes place each fall and spring, is a night of one-of-a kind merchandise, valuable store discounts, raffle prizes, giveaways, refreshments, and plenty of fun and surprises! Seth Meyers to Lead Northwestern Homecoming ParadeSeth Meyers to Lead Northwestern Homecoming Parade
American actor, comedian, head writer for "Saturday Night Live" (SNL) and SNL's "Weekend Update" anchor Seth Meyers will be the star attraction during Northwestern University's 2011 Homecoming festivities the weekend of Oct. 21 to 23. Meyers will serve as the Grand Marshal for the Friday night, Oct. 21 Homecoming Parade which begins at 6:30pm. The Pep Rally which begins at 7:30 p.m., will take place at Deering Meadow, the green space between Deering Library (1937 Sheridan Road) and Sheridan Road. The Homecoming Game at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 between the Northwestern Wildcats and the Penn State Nittany Lions. Celebrate Halloween, if you dare, at the Chicago Botanic Garden! HallowFest: A Garden of Good...and Evil is the start of the spook-tacular season with fun family activities (Friday through Sunday, October 21 - 23). When visitors arrive for HallowFest, they can choose between the "spooky" or "friendly" paths, both of which lead to loads of Halloween-inspired activities including crafts and face painting. The Spooky Pooch Parade (Saturday, October 29) is the one day each year when visitors can bring their dogs to the Garden. The cleverly costumed canines not only march in a parade, but they also partake in an awards ceremony. Come show off your costume and enjoy the end of the Model Railroad Garden season during Trains, Tricks and Treats (Saturday and Sunday, October 29 and 30). Decorated with spider webs, spiders, ghosts, goblins and pumpkins, the Model Railroad Garden is a great place to celebrate Halloween! This spectacular event is a fusion of the former Winnetka Antiques Show and the Modernism Show, two of the Midwest's most well respected events (with a combined 60 year history!) Encompassing periods of design ranging from the 17th century to the mid 20th century, esteemed dealers from across the country will showcase fine examples of American, British, French and Asian antiques, as well as pieces from the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Mid-Century design movements. The exhibition and sale will offer furniture, silver, ceramics, jewelry, garden antiques, lighting, rugs, textiles, fine and folk art, architectural artifacts and even more. Join in on a weekend chock full of family fun, free entertainment and fall traditions at the 3rd Annual WFamily Harvest Fall Festival (noon to 5 pm each day). New this year is a special performances by Million Dollar Quartet! As always, classic fall activities will be front and center throughout the festival including guest appearances by costumed characters. Kids of all ages will enjoy the free hay maze, a visit to the pumpkin patch, a costume contest, and arts & crafts projects. All guests will receive a free pumpkin and a trick or treat bag that they can decorate on the spot. For $3 per ticket, a trackless train will take visitors on a special cruise throughout the beautifully landscaped center. Also this month (Saturday, October 22 at 8 pm), two veteran stars from the original Broadway cast of the hit musical "Rent" present a once-in-a-lifetime tag-team concert celebrating their individual musical careers with a pop rock evening. Science + You invites you to make a healthy "pretend" soup in a test kitchen by selecting appropriate ingredients, compare your finger prints to others using video microscopes, guide antibodies through the bloodstream to eliminate germs from the body, and use a glove box - just like a real scientist - to solve mathematical problems.
