Throughout Downtown Evanston
Professional cycling is coming to Evanston this month when the city welcomes 500 professional cyclists from over 20 countries as they race throughout downtown Evanston. To accommodate the cyclists and spectators, several streets will be blocked off to host the largest, free to the public, sporting event on the North Shore! Sponsored by Evanston Northwestern Health Care, the Chicago leg of the 17 day-long Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic (which runs from July 11-27 and is in its 38th year), will have cyclists riding a .9 mile circuit starting around Fountain Square. Spectators are invited to watch the race from local restaurants, visit shops along the race course and make a day of it with live music and dancing. A kids' race for children ages 3-10 will be held on the course right before the top tier racers start. For more information, visit www.enhgrandprix.com.

Now through October 5 (every Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 and 2:30 pm), guests to the Chicago Botanic Garden are invited to enjoy the very popular Great Chef Series, which features noted chefs preparing a variety of recipes with garden-fresh ingredients. Demonstrations are free and take place in the Regenstein Fruit & Vegetable Garden's open-air amphitheater. Reservations are not required, but seating is on a first come, first served basis. Chefs participating this year include Mark Hannon and Jeffrey Sills (Quince, Evanston) and Alvaro Chavez (Depot Nuevo, Wilmette). On July 26 and 27, be sure to attend the annual Barilla Italian Cooking Weekend where local chefs demonstrate how to cook Italian recipes using fresh ingredients such as those found in the Regenstein Fruit & Vegetable Garden. This much anticipated annual event features realistic Civil War battle reenactments with Union and Confederate camps and Blue vs. Gray skirmishes (complete with authentic Civil War clothing and uniforms!)
