The Northbrook Park District invites the entire community to celebrate the joys of the season at its annual Winter Carnival. This free family event, which runs from 11 am to 1:30 pm, includes the 8th Annual Chili Cook-Off, a snowboarding demonstration, ice skating, a dog sled demonstration, a sled decorating contest, a bonfire with free s'mores, a snowshoe obstacle course, family games, a DJ, food and more! Save the date. You won't want to miss it! Please take note of the new location, Meadowhill Park. Pre-registration is required if you'd like to enter the Chili Cook-Off. Eva Mozes Kor, who survived Josef Mengele's cruel twin experiments in the Auschwitz concentration camp, shocks other Holocaust survivors when she decides to forgive the perpetrators as a way of self-healing, watch the riveting documentary, Forgiving Dr. Mengele, followed by a discussion (Sunday, January 8 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm). On Sunday, January 15, a dramatic reading of Judgment at Nuremberg will take place from 12:30 to 3:30 pm), and Memorialization and Memory - In Recognition of the International Day of Holocaust Remembrance will be featured on Thursday, January 26 from 6:30 to 8 pm. Also check out, before it closes on January 15, The Art of Gaman which showcases arts and crafts made by Japanese Americans in U.S. internment camps during World War II. If you love Elvis, come toast the King's 77th birthday during the Elvis Tribute Artist Spectacular (Thursday, January 5 at 7:30 pm). Performed by multiple entertainers representing the different eras of Elvis' incredible career. Also this month, Capitol Steps makes its annual appearance with a new show - Desperate Housemembers - promising plenty of laughs (January 26-29), the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats (January 31 - February 4) and Northlight Theatre's Black Pearl Sings! (January 13 - February 19), the Depression-era story of two extraordinary women: a gifted singer stuck in a Texas prison and the Library of Congress song collector who is determined to introduce her silky voice and steely spirit to the world. This new exhibit confirms that artists were not just illustrators in the service of scientists, but that their work played an active role in facilitating the understanding of new concepts in astronomy, geography, natural history and anatomy. Featuring work by Albrecht Durer, Hans Holbein, Hendrick Goltzius, Jacques de Gheyn and others, the exhibition was organized by the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Mass., in collaboration with the Block Museum. Digital displays, videos, an audio guide, an iPad/iPhone app and interactive replicas of sundials, globes and other tools add exciting hands-on components. On Friday, January 20 (10:30 am to 5 pm), the Block Museum will host Knowledge|Replication: Early Modern Sciences in Print, a conference expanding the territory charted in "Prints and the Pursuit of Knowledge." A fun, multi-sensory exhibition for children and adults that lets you see, feel, and hear sounds. Learn how humans hear and discover how well you can listen. Developed by the Sciencecenter in Ithaca, New York, Sonic Sensation brings interative fun in the tradition of all the amazing exhibits at the museum. Visitors can See Sound, conduct an Invisible Orchestra, Hide Critters in a Cupboard and find them using only sound, and many more aural delights. For more information, click here.

Where Print Still Lives!

Part retail store, part museum, Bob Katzman's Magazine Museum is a place like no other! With over 100,000 periodicals dating as far back as 1681, adults and kids alike will marvel at the very first editions of such popular magazines as Life, Ebony, Time, Newsweek, Vogue, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated and Ladies Home Journal. In addition to magazines, Bob also carries 20,000 posters and hundreds flags from every corner of the globe. His store is open to teachers for student field trips and he's called upon over and over again to provide authentic props for movie production companies. While collectors frequent the shop, many of Bob's customers are those looking for magazines that reflect important and/or sentimental times in their lives such as college graduation, a birth date, a wedding anniversary or a first date. "People who give the gift of an old magazine are always amazed at the tremendously emotional response they receive from the recipient," says Katzman.
